Disaster Risk Finance and Insurance Learning Week 2025

The World Bank Group (WBG) and the Insurance Development Forum (IDF) are co-hosting a learning week on disaster risk finance and insurance in Venice, Italy. The "Disaster Risk Finance and Insurance Learning Week 2025" aims to provide a platform to share experiences on designing and implementing effective climate and disaster risk financing strategies. The program is part of the WBG Academy that aims to accelerate reforms for development impact and offers a platform to bring together government officials, insurance industry, and academia to share experiences on designing and implementing effective climate and disaster risk financing strategies.
The Learning Week is co-hosted by WBG and IDF in collaboration with International Finance Corporation (IFC), Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA), Ca' Foscari University of Venice, Generali, and Bocconi University.
The themes of this invite-only learning week are:
- Countries Day - Peer-to-Peer Exchange: A day for country delegates to share experiences and lessons learned on disaster risk finance implementation. Presentations from 10 countries followed by attendance at the opening ceremony of Venice Climate Week
- Knowledge Day - Public Private Insurance Programs: Technical deep-dives on insurance solutions, focusing on sovereign risk transfer, livelihood protection, and using insurance to drive disaster risk reduction. Features private sector expertise and participation from Bocconi University and IFC.
- IDF Summit - High-level Dialogues: The flagship high-level convening of the climate and disaster risk finance community, focused on bold, practical solutions and reflections on 10 years of progress under the theme “Imagine the Possible”.
- University Day - Analysis to Application: A day hosted by Ca’ Foscari University, exploring research on climate risk analysis, risk communication, long-term climate impacts, and demographic and tourism-related vulnerabilities. The World Bank and MIGA will also share innovations in product offers for climate and disaster-related shocks.
